CCA MEDIAlab Rendering Workshops
Saturday, November 14, 2009

In preparation for final reviews, the CCA MEDIAlab will host 2 weekend workshops on Saturday, November 14 in advanced visualization techniques. The workshops are free and open to all CCA students and faculty. The workshops will cover the two main rendering engines currently available in the CCA labs: Maxwell Renderer and Mental Ray Renderer. Learn the basics of preparing your digital model, setting up lighting, applying materials, and compositing in post-production in these workshops.

Maxwell Renderer
Instructor: Aaron Taylor Harvey
10am – 1pm, Lab A

Mental Ray in 3DS Max Design 2010
Instructor: Travis Schmiesing, Director of Visualization at HOK
2pm – 5pm, Lab A

Feel free to attend both if you are interested. Both rendering engines have advantages and disadvantages. In general, Maxwell is easier to use, but slower. Mental Ray is more complex, but faster. Both produce great renderings with the right experience. No experience is necessary in either application, however basic knowledge of 3D modeling is essential. Both will cover exporting digital models from Rhino into Maxwell or 3DS Max. Seating is based on a first come, first served basis. The rooms can only hold 20 people or so, so arrive early for a good seat.

You are free to use either the CCA Lab computers or your own laptop however please have the software pre-installed on your laptop if you plan to use it during the workshop. There will not be time in the workshop to troubleshoot installation issues on personal laptops. Trial versions of Maxwell can be downloaded here. 3DS Max Design 2010 (with Mental Ray) can be downloaded by registering with your cca.edu email address at students.autodesk.com
