Description: This workshop will introduce the basic tools and techniques required to make custom interactive maps in Flash. We will focus on Stamen’s opensource ModestMaps Actionscript library, the core of our many mapping projects. Together, we will move from making simple interactive maps towards using custom cartography and overlaying geographic data.
Sha Hwang is a Design Technologist at Stamen Design, a design and technology studio in San Francisco that focuses primarily on data visualization and interactive mapping. Projects built on ModestMaps include San Francisco Crimespotting, the London Olympics Map, the SFMoMA ArtScope, and the MySociety Travel Time Maps.
Software/Hardware: A 60-day trial of Flex Builder (the environment we write Actionscript in) is available on Adobe’s website here. The ModestMaps library is free and available here. Custom map tiles can be generated with Zoomify Express, available here.
All workshop attendees should bring their own laptop with the workshop software pre-installed.
