Congratulations to CCA MAAD student Jiries Alali, who worked with Negar Kalantar + Alireza Borhani, for presenting his work at ACADIA 2020 in Paper Session 11: Disrupted Practice, Collaboration, Workflows, and Labor.

Casting on a Dump: Using Sand as a Form-Generating Formwork

Alali’s research, “Casting on a Dump” focuses on finding accessible, low-tech fabrication methodologies that allow for constructing parametrically designed non-standard modular cast panels”, as presented in the Abstract. Freeform concrete geometry currently relies upon expensive fabrication processes so introducing sand, an abundant mixture, produces more benefits. This easily formed, reusable and zero-waste formwork is also paired with parametricism which creates a variety of non-standard panels. This design can benefit less-developed areas where climate, resources and economy align with the main principles of this research.

Alali performed his research at the Autodesk Technology Center under the residency program.
